Ramadan in Dubai
Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. This year, Ramadan started last 26 May 2017, Friday and it is expected to end on 24 June 2017, Saturday though the date may vary based on the visual sightings of the crescent moon.
As a Islamic country, the United Arab Emirates strictly observes the month of Ramadan. One of the most noted practice is obligatory fasting for adult Muslims, except those who are ill, travelling, elderly, pregnant, breastfeeding, diabetic or menstruating. Fasting is observed from dawn until sunset.
It is strictly not allowed to eat in open areas during daytime, however, due to the influx of tourists, Dubai has accommodated non-Muslims during Ramadan by allowing hotels and food court in malls to have covered areas to have breakfast and lunch.
Pubs and clubs usually stops their operations during Ramadan. They may be open only to serve food but not alcohol. Local establishments, like mini groceries and cafeterias, will be closed during daytime. They usually open after iftar, the breaking of the fast after sunset. Malls usually adjust their timings and close late during Ramadan.
For tourists, it is essential that we respect the norms of Muslims during Ramadan while in Dubai. Doing otherwise can put you in trouble with the local authorities.
Dubai is still a great place to visit during Ramadan with tourist accommodations and activities on great discount.
